Hello, wonderful listeners. I’m your host, Faith Enilama, and welcome to the very first episode of Chronicles of a Tech Sis. Today, I’ll be walking you through my journey of transitioning from a non-technical background in digital marketing to becoming a cloud and cybersecurity engineer. This is a topic very dear to my heart, and I hope you enjoy it.
Before we dive in, let me give you a brief introduction to what Chronicles of a Tech Sis is all about. This podcast explores personal tech stories and journeys, industry trends in cloud, cybersecurity, AI, and everything in between. As your host, I’ll share my personal journey and insights in every episode, often featuring guest speakers. But today, it’s all about me—sharing the crucial moments when I transitioned from digital marketing to cloud and cybersecurity, my experiences, and where I am now.
Just so you know, this is my very first episode and my first time doing a podcast, so I am incredibly excited to start this journey with you. Let’s get into it together!
My tech journey started in a place you probably wouldn’t expect. It didn’t begin with lines of code, but rather with blog posts, SEO, content strategy, and digital marketing. Today, we’ll go through the journey of a biochemist turned digital marketer turned cloud and cybersecurity engineer.
Now, you’re probably wondering—how did a biochemist transition into tech? The truth is, my path to tech wasn’t planned. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, but life had other plans for me. I got into digital marketing at a PR firm in Lagos, Nigeria. I loved the creativity and the fast-paced environment of the industry. It was exciting to see how things worked and grew. I thrived in this environment, enjoying the freedom to create, learn, and adapt.
My first exposure to tech came when I worked on a project as a project coordinator. My company was venturing into tech, and I collaborated with developers on a specific project. For two weeks, I watched them work and became fascinated by what they were doing. I didn’t even know what “code” was at the time, but I admired how a product came to life. That experience sparked something in me, and I decided to explore learning technical skills.
I started with CSS and HTML, taking online training courses. Before that, I had built a WordPress blog for myself. At the time, I didn’t understand much, but I knew enough to start tinkering. I explored documentation and learned by doing. As I gained confidence, I began building websites for myself and friends, even earning some income from it.
Eventually, I decided to quit my job to fully immerse myself in tech. I became deeply passionate about DevOps and cloud computing. To make ends meet, I continued building websites and freelancing in digital marketing. It wasn’t easy. I often felt overwhelmed and struggled with imposter syndrome. However, I kept learning through platforms like Udemy, Udacity, and YouTube.
Mentorship and community played significant roles in my journey. I found guidance from a mentor who provided a roadmap for my learning. Joining She Code Africa, a female tech community, offered me the support and encouragement I needed. Through scholarships and consistent effort, I learned AWS, cloud computing, and other essential skills.
The journey wasn’t smooth. Learning tech was harder than I had imagined. There were moments of frustration and self-doubt, but I persevered. I attended tech conferences, practiced daily, and built a strong foundation for my career. Over time, my efforts paid off. I secured internships, completed my master’s in cybersecurity, and landed a full-time role in tech.
Looking back, it’s been a rewarding journey. I’m excited to share more about my experiences and insights through this podcast. Whether you’re starting out or navigating challenges in tech, I hope this inspires you to stay dedicated and persistent. With the right mindset and support, anything is possible.
